Hounds

Trailhounds looking for loving homes

Below are some of the trailhounds currently available for adoption. We work closely with the racing owners to help find suitable retirement homes, and are able to supply a full history of each hound, e.g whether they have lived with children, cats, etc. We take in around 40 hounds a year; most we home ourselves and some go to reputable rehoming centres throughout the country. Hounds are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. We usually visit you in your home so that we can answer any questions. There is a £150 adoption donation. We offer 1 month free insurance with PETPLAN Insurance. If you are new to trailhounds, please carefully read our FAQ and training page to be sure that a trailhound is the right breed for you.

PLEASE NOTE – NOT ALL OF OUR AVAILABLE HOUNDS ARE LISTED BELOW. If you are interested in adopting, get in touch and we can send you our questionnaire so that you can be added to our waiting list.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? –  Contact us and we will send you a pre adoption form. Once we know what you are looking for, we can see if we have a match.

If you are interested in a hound listed below that is in another rehoming centre, contact the centre directly to register interest – their own homing criteria will apply.

HOUND TRAILERS – Please ring Sue or Barbara if you have a hound you wish to rehome.
We can offer the following options:
* We can find a home privately for your hound (either with it staying with you until adopted OR for it to come into our care until adopted).
* We can send your hound to a trusted external rehoming centre, in which case they take over sole responsibility for it. We have been lucky to be supported by these centres for many years, and they find fantastic homes.
* If you decide to find a retirement home yourselves without our input, we are still happy to pay for neutering, and to assist with home checks, if you require it.
* If you have a hound that needs to come in urgently, we are always happy to try and help without a long wait.
* If you have a hound with a racing injury, please get in touch. We have previously found great homes for hounds, including amputees, once we have had their vet work done. We are happy to cover vet costs.
PLEASE RING US FOR A CHAT.

Henry aged 5 and Murphy aged 4

29/06/25 HENRY RESERVED  Henry is a gorgeous, affectionate 5 year old Trailhound looking for a forever home where he can enjoy life at a gentler pace. Henry has an old knee injury that means he can’t compete anymore—but he still runs, walks, and plays like normal, and is pain-free in his everyday life. Happy to discuss this further with any potential adopters.

He’s good with other dogs, has grown up around a young child, and brings tons of love and personality wherever he goes. He would need a secure background as he is a typical hound with selective hearing. He is confident around new people and dogs. He also loves his food!

Murphy is a handsome 4-year-old Trailhound bursting with love and personality. He is incredibly affectionate and adores people,he has grown up around a young child. Murphy would suit being an only dog in a rural, active or sporting home with someone who is dog savvy or has rehomed a Trailhound before and can give him the attention and structure he thrives on. A secure garden would be needed. He is very confident around new people and loves to love. He can be very enthusiastic around people and he is very food orientated.

Both hounds will be getting neutered soon ready for rehoming.

Both hounds will be staying with their racing owners in North Cumbria until their perfect homes are found. Please email initial enquiries to us at trailhoundwelfare@hotmail.co.uk  If you would like to chat about either of them first then please ring 07824739710

Polly, aged 2 years

Meet Polly. She is 2 years old. Polly is a petite 20kg and what she lacks in size, she makes up for in energy. She loves her walks so is looking for an active home. She is a very loveable girl, and loves to cuddle up on the sofa. She is with us in foster in north Cumbria.

Polly is the sweetest little hound you could meet, and we are loving having her stay with us.

Polly will need a secure garden. She is shy of new people but really comes out of her shell once she knows you. She gets on great with other dogs and has lived among farm animals and farm cats. She could live with children. Polly would love to live with another dog too if possible. If you would like to know more about Polly, then call us or drop us an email.

Lady aged 6, Mo aged 7, Joey aged 5, Baby Buggle aged 5 months

17/06/2025 updated. The 4 hounds listed below are all currently at the same home in west Cumbria with their racing family. They are looking for separate homes. Please contact us for more details about their individual homing needs.

Lady is 6 years old and will make the best pet. She has great recall, loves people, children, dogs and all animals. Clean in her kennel so will easily housetrain. She does not pull on the lead and is a little sweetie.

Joey, (lemon and white), he is 5 years old. Joey is a big, happy hound who loves to play ball, he gets on great with other dogs.

Baby Buggle, (mostly white) was born 06/01/2025). Buggle is a very small hound. Her family feel she will not make the size to be a successful racer and are keen for her to have a lovely home as a pampered pet.

Mo, aged 7 (tri colour). She is a little bit shy and may be happier living with another dog.

If you are interested in any of the above hounds, please contact us so that we can discuss their needs with you. Pictures from left to right, Mo, Baby Buggle, Joey.  Click pics to enlarge. Keep an eye on our Instagram page as we often post extra photos on there.

Norman, aged 3 years

Meet Norman who is 3 years old. He is such a sweet young dog. Lovely Norman has a slight neurological issue which we will discuss with interested people. It does not affect him as a pet. He has never raced but he stayed within his racing owners family as a house pet. Due to changes in circumstances, they feel Norman will be happier in a home that can give him more time.

  • Norman is house trained
  • Norman is neutered
  • Norman is an active boy and needs an active home
  • Norman loves to go running so would be a great candidate for Canicross, park runs or general keep fit runners
  • Norman is used to living with dogs, children
  • Norman does not jump over average sized fencing
  • Norman lives in west Cumbria and would need prospective adopters to visit him there

Please email us for more details.

UPDATE November 2024 Lovely Norman went for a few days visit with a family in Cumbria who have another trailhound. The visit went really well and they completely fell in love with Norman, but sadly he did not take to living along with their cat, despite living with 3 cats all his life. So sadly he has gone back to his original home. The people he stayed with absolutely loved having him there and would recommend him to anyone so please get in touch if you would like to meet him. NO CATS though!

Lassie aged 4 and half

Lassie is a lovely 4 year old girl who has never raced. Her owners homed her as a puppy but unfortunately she was returned to them recently due to conflict in the home with a resident terrier. Lassie is back with her racing family on a farm. She may be happier as an only dog, getting all her owners attention.

Lassie came to stay with us for a weekend so that we could assess her. Lassie is a sweet and friendly girl who loves cuddles. She enjoys her walks in the country. She lacks a bit of confidence in new places and situations. We feel she will be happier in a rural/semi rural environment where she can have routine. She is completely clean in the home and was relaxed around a male hound in the home. No sign of food guarding. She met a number of different dogs at the farm and chose to avoid the noisy ones!  She travels well in the car.

We would be looking to home her from Cumbria so an adopter would need to visit her up here. Lassie will make a lovely companion for someone offering a quiet home with a nice garden.

Lassie had a season in the summer so will not be able to be neutered for a few weeks. If Lassie is homed before neutering, preference will be given to adopters that we know well, as it is imperative that she is neutered when the time is right. Do get in touch about Lassie if you would like to know more. Click pics to enlarge.

Other hound types in other rehoming centres

Although we primarily promote trailhounds looking for homes (and love them so much that we want you to adopt one!), we also like to support other organisations so occasionally list different hounds on this page. Here are some organisations that home other hound breeds and hound crosses.

Dogs Trust – national organisation with rehoming centres all over the UK. Use their drop down menu to find a hound breed, usually listed as trailhound, beagle, harrier or foxhound.

Beagle Welfare – rehomimg centre at Burton 0n Trent. Also have beagles in foster homes throughout the country.

Foxhound Welfare UK – based in the North East near Newcastle but homes throughout the country. Has variety of hound breeds for adoption.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home – has occasional hound type dogs in need of a home. Based in south east UK. Click link to look at available dogs.
