Trailhounds looking for loving homes
- March 10, 2026
Below are some of the trailhounds currently available for adoption (there may be more hounds that we have not yet listed). We work closely with the racing owners to help find suitable retirement homes, and are able to supply a full history of each hound, e.g whether they have lived with children, cats, etc. We take in up to 40 hounds a year; many we home ourselves while some go to reputable rehoming centres. Hounds are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. We usually visit you in your home so that we can answer any questions. There is a £200 adoption donation. We offer 1 month free insurance with PETPLAN Insurance. If you are new to trailhounds, please carefully read our FAQ and training page to be sure that a trailhound is the right breed for you. Although we are based in Cumbria, we home hounds throughout the country.
Initial enquiries: 01697478383 (Sue) or 07773 252350 (Sue) or 07958 517366 (Barbara)

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? – Contact us and we will send you a pre adoption form. Once we know what you are looking for, we can see if we have a match. If you are interested in a hound listed below that is in another rehoming centre, contact the centre directly to register interest – their own homing criteria will apply.

HOUND TRAILERS – Please ring Sue or Barbara if you have a hound you wish to rehome.
We can offer the following options:
* We can find a home privately for your hound (either with it staying with you until adopted OR for it to come into our care until adopted).
* We can send your hound to a trusted external rehoming centre, in which case they take over sole responsibility for it. We have been lucky to be supported by these centres for many years, and they find fantastic homes.
* If you decide to find a retirement home yourselves without our input, we are still happy to pay for neutering, and to assist with home checks, if you require it.
* If you have a hound that needs to come in urgently, we are always happy to try and help without a long wait.
* If you have a hound with a racing injury, please get in touch. We have previously found great homes for hounds, including amputees, once we have had their vet work done. We are happy to cover vet costs.
PLEASE RING US FOR A CHAT.
IF YOU CANNOT SEE ANY HOUNDS LISTED THEN CLICK ‘ADOPT A HOUND’ ON THE LINKS BAR ALONG THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
Jilly, aged 2 years, with us in foster in south Cumbria
- March 9, 2026
10/03/2026 UPDATED Two year old Jilly (birthday 10/02/2024) has been with us since 22/02/2026 and is settling well to a completely new environment and routine. She has bounced back from her recent spay operation and, as with most Trailhounds, it’s hard to keep her quiet during her recovery! Jilly is slowly getting used to all the new household noises but is still not used to the TV and occasionally jumps if it’s a bit loud and sudden. She then looks at the resident Trailhound, Finn, who is generally sleeping or is unmoved and clearly wonders why he’s not reacting 😊 So Finn is showing her the ropes and routines, and they are getting on well together – even if he does steal her bed frequently!
Jilly has been clean in the house and is sleeping well in her crate overnight and, although she was a little unsettled the first night, there hasn’t been a peep from her any night since. Jilly definitely knows her name and responds very well when called, although it’s a work in progress as she can switch off her hearing if the smells are too irresistible! Jilly loves playing with tennis balls on her own in the garden and is very friendly with everyone she meets out on walk, both 2 legged and 4 legged. All the signs are that Jilly would settle as an only dog or be happy to share the sofa with another
10/03/2026 An update from Jilly herself – I love to play with tennis balls. I have been clean in the house and I ask at the door to go out. I love everybody whether they have 2 legs or 4.It took me a few days to get used to the household noises but now I love relaxing on the couch. I would be happy to live with other dogs or on my own. I am living in south Cumbria but can be rehomed anywhere in the UK. I sleep very well in my crate overnight and I’m not an early riser!
Jilly’s adventures continued with a bus/train and beach trip. See her videos on our Facebook and Instagram pages. (to be added later in day on 10th March)
Bruno, aged 7 years, in foster in north Cumbria
- March 7, 2026
NEW IN 03/03/2026 Say hello to lovely Bruno who is just 7 years old. He is a friendly and outgoing boy. He loves his walks but also settles in the house afterwards. Bruno has lived in a house for a few years so is fully house trained. Bruno has no racing injuries so would be happy with very long hikes. He gets on with other dogs but is also happy doing things alone with his handler. Bruno has come to stay with us in Cumbria while we arrange his neuter and vaccinations. After that, he may go to one of our foster homes.
We feel Bruno may enjoy a home with adults or older children (teen +) as he is quite active when out. We are still getting to know him so this page will be updated as we get to know him better. Very soon, we will see if he enjoys going running with his handler, as a lot of people these days enjoy jogging or canicross with their dog. We home hounds all over the country. We will get a video together soon so keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

Jax, aged 21 months, with us in foster in north Cumbria
- March 7, 2026
18/03/2026 JAX HAS INTEREST Say hi to Jax, who has come to stay with us while we look for his perfect home. Jax will be 2 years old in April 2026.
Jax is an adorable and gentle boy who gets on well with the other hounds he lives with. Jax was very bonded with his racing owner and is already quickly building up his trust and confidence with his foster carer. He will need an adopter who has a calm and supportive manner as he lacks confidence around new people and situations. He is great in the house, loves the sofa, and has always been clean. Jax just needs a patient adopter who will introduce him new experiences in a positive way. He is quick to learn and is a lovely house guest.
Jax could live with another dog, as he loves to play. He could be an only dog too, as he gravitates to people he knows for cuddles and attention. He is such a wonderful character.
Jax travels well in a car, either on his own or with other dogs. He walks well on a lead with minimal pulling. He enjoys going on walks and exploring, either with other dogs or on his own. We often walk on the fells where there are lot of dogs and other walkers. He is also good around passing traffic. We have yet to introduce him to walking in more urban areas.
Jax has been neutered, vaccinated, chipped, worm and flea treated.
Jax could be around children but probably a calm, adult home will suit him better.

Polly, aged 2 and half years, in foster with us in north Cumbria
- March 6, 2026
Meet Polly. She is 3 years old. Polly is a petite 20kg hound and what she lacks in size, she makes up for in energy. She loves her walks so is looking for an active home. She is a very loveable girl, and loves to cuddle up on the sofa. She is with us in foster in north Cumbria.
Polly is the sweetest little hound you could meet, and we are loving having her stay with us. She is a fun and cheeky companion who loves to play with other dogs. She adores playing with toys, and carrying them around with her.
Polly will need a secure garden in a home in a rural and quiet location. Unexpected noises bother her. She is shy of new people but really comes out of her shell once she knows you. She gets on great with other dogs and has lived among farm animals. She could live with older children who will understand the importance of keeping gates/doors closed. Polly would love to live with an outgoing dog to help her confidence. If you would like to know more about Polly, then call us or drop us an email.
If you enjoy jogging or canicross, Polly may be a perfect running partner. A running friend has been taking Polly on runs on the fells, and she is loving it. Check out her videos on our Facebook Facebook and INSTAGRAM

POLLY’S HISTORY In case anyone wonders why Polly has been available for some time, it may help if we explain more of her history. When she was racing in 2024, she got lost on the fells. She was out for a number of days with no sightings, despite her family and friends searching daily for her. She was finally found on the 9th day. For this reason, we are being very careful of the home that we choose for her. It must meet her needs exactly.
March 2026 UPDATE Polly recently had a 2 week break in Devon to see if the home may suit her needs. Polly loved going for long country runs but was less keen on walking through the busy, and sometimes noisy, village. She loved cuddling up with the family on the sofa but was less happy in the garden which was surrounded by other cottages and their associated noises. Polly is very dog friendly but the young dog in the home was a bit too excited by her presence, and was showing no signs of calming down. Ultimately , we all agreed that it was not quite right for her, but we learnt more about her needs. We absolutely know that a perfect home is out there for her. Please contact us for a chat to find out more about Polly.

Murphy aged 4
- March 4, 2026
Murphy is a handsome 4-year-old Trailhound bursting with love and personality. He is incredibly affectionate and adores people, he has grown up around a young child. Murphy would suit being an only dog in a rural, active or sporting home with someone who is dog savvy or has rehomed a Trailhound before and can give him the attention and structure he thrives on. A secure garden would be needed. He is very confident around new people and loves to love. He can be very enthusiastic around people and he is very food orientated.
Murphy will be staying with his racing owners in North Cumbria until his perfect home is found. Please email initial enquiries to us at trailhoundwelfare@hotmail.co.uk If you would like to chat about Murphy then please ring 07824739710
